Working the Water: The Annapolis Boat Show

I worked on the water crew at the 2010 Annapolis Boat Show. The water crew sets up the docks, catches lines for the boats as they arrive, and then closes the docks in behind them to create the web of docks, lines, and boats that make up the show. There are actually two shows: the [...]

A Wet Welcome Home

I arrived in Annapolis, in the midst of the downpour from the recent tropical storm, on a delayed train from VA around midnight last night to one soaking wet boyfriend with a handful of sunflowers that perfectly matched his yellow hand-me-down rain suit (courtesy of the Neece family). I expected him to be wet, but [...]

Let the Creativity Flow?

I’m going to be completely honest here. Last week, I nearly went completely stir crazy working on new t-shirt designs on the boat. It most certainly is possible to work there, but it is also most certainly not a productive environment. Brian continues to point out to me that, if I want to make art, [...]

A Finite Water Supply

Our two combined water tanks (approx. 65 gallons) provide Illusion with anywhere from four-six weeks of water depending on how often we cook and need to wash dishes. The faucet on our sink (as on most boats) only runs as long as you twist the knob, which can make washing dishes more difficult, but greatly [...]

Learning When to Trust the Ropes

…and consequently when not to.

I will be the first to admit that I have cursed our boat countless times for its shortcomings and all of the work that Illusion has demanded of us (due to past neglect), but I have also grown to appreciate and love my little floating home. I enjoy life at anchor. [...]

Friday's Fireworks

On Fridays that the Riverdogs (Charleston’s baseball team) have a home game, the stadium shoots off fireworks over the river. Last night happened to be one of those nights, so we kicked off our shoes and enjoyed the show from the boat.

The Civilized Life

Lately I’ve been feeling like I live under a huge floating mound of my own belongings. I’m not going to lie, as I approached the boat on my walk in from work today, I likened my dwelling to a hobbit hole. Maybe it was the small garden that we moved to the front of the [...]

Running Water!

And we now have running water! (do a little dance) hooray!

Thanks to Larry Muething, after two months on the boat, we finally have the ability to use the faucets and both sinks. This is a big step up in the world of boat living. This means multitudes to me. Specifically, this means no more washing [...]

The Leaks and My Artist Studio

Someone needs to tell the weather to cooperate. It’s been rainy and windy for the past three weeks, and it sure hasn’t made boat life any easier. On the bright side, at least we know where all of the leaks are. Brian took off all of the stanchions that were bolted to the deck in [...]
