Talking Earth-life Balance and PBS's New Show

Lara Neece February 12, 2015

Have any of you caught Earth: A New Wild, PBS's latest documentary by National Geographic Studios and Dr. M. Sanjayan? It has literally set my brain on fire (picture little fireworks of thoughts and inspiration exploding in there). I love a good nature documentary, but this one goes above and beyond with a message I find incredibly encouraging. The premise? That humans and animals are meant to live together and in fact can thrive in close proximity to each other.

Migration Makes Sense

Lara Neece November 11, 2014

It's that time of year again: October is over; the time has changed; and the cold fronts are rolling through with greater frequency. After living in the South my whole life, I can safely say that I am not a cold weather girl. I love the sun, a warm breeze, light clothing, and being able to leave the windows and doors open. After spending three years aboard our sailboat Illusion (through 12 seasons) without heating or AC, it's natural that I feel a strong urge to get a move on and "fly" south when the weather gets cold.

Autumn in Georgia, the Best Time for a Paddle

Lara Neece October 28, 2014

There is seriously no better way to unplug than to hit the water. It alters your sense of reality in the best way possible and let's face it, chances of you checking your phone when there is a high probability of it falling into a creek are pretty slim. Brian and I bought kayaks this summer, but due to travel and unfortunate circumstances involving our jeep (which we had to replace), we've hardly been able to use them. Lucky for us, we live in Georgia and October is the absolute best time to go for a paddle. The humidity is down, there are fewer bugs, and the temperature is just right. :)

It Starts with a Walk Outside

Lara Neece September 11, 2014

Ideas can ebb and flow just like the tide or suddenly come to a peak that cascades into a full on wave. My mind has been churning with questions and ideas lately and the big ones that keeps rising to the surface are about what's at the heart. Why am I doing this? Why did I decide to become an artist? Why did I start designing tshirts? Why am I focusing so much effort to learn about sustainable manufacturing and design a skirt from scratch? It's definitely not about making money; I'm not a business major or even all that outgoing, but I keep chugging along because I believe in Forest and Fin and want it to reach it’s highest potential. And for years I've had this feeling that I have something that needs to be shared with the world. It's an intangible thought - more of a feeling or intuition - but lately I've been working hard to put it into words.

My happy place lately. Social distancing has been tough for sure. Closing my shop; preschool being closed; no babysitting help; few adult conversations; zero “me time”; and no friend visits or play dates have really changed my day-to-day

Forest and Fin

We are designed to be outside.

Inspired by the environment and three-and-a-half years living on a small sailboat, designer Lara Neece spent the last of her savings to purchase equipment, set up a screen-printing studio, and create her company Forest and Fin. An award-winning artist and self-taught graphic designer, she designed and printed her first nature-inspired screen-printed apparel by hand using water-based inks and a manual press. Forest and Fin balances beauty,  functionality, and responsible design to inspire people to spend more time outside. Items are made as earth-friendly as possible with portions of revenue giving back to environmental conservation efforts.
