I wanted to take a minute to introduce you to my uber talented friend, Katie J Mattern, the creator of Waypost Craft a handmade leather goods brand and the pattern maker for the first Bicycle Wrap Skirt. She has put a lot of hours into the Bicycle Wrap Skirt project with me, and has been instrumental in the development of the prototype and the first sample skirt, for which I am oh so grateful. Katie just launched her website a few weeks ago, which you really must check out, and is preparing for the Porter Flea market in Nashville in December. When I'm not monopolizing her time (just kidding!), she can be found making beautiful handcrafted leather bags, journals, and other items. She studied Fibers at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) and is heavily influenced by southwestern colors, patterns, weavings, and traditional methods of craftsmanship.
I've asked Katie a few questions so that you can get to know her a little bit better. Here are her answers in her own words.
Describe your work in a few sentences.
My work is fairly diverse, from leather bags to knitted hats. My favorite work involves creating a material and turning it into a functional piece. An example of that would be weaving fabric and making a bag out of it. I try to incorporate traditional craft in all my work and strive for quality craftsmanship.
How is your work influenced by the environment?
Most all of the materials I begin with are natural. The most beautiful and intricate fibers exist naturally and capturing those intricacies to create a product influence the beauty and outcome immensely.
When do you feel the most connected to the Earth?
I love to be immersed in nature. Finding myself in the middle of a forest or even digging in dirt in my backyard makes me appreciate the beautiful details of the Earth. So much beauty exists naturally, taking the time to get outside and look around does my soul so much good.
What is your favorite outdoor activity?
It is so refreshing to lay in the grass and read a good book. Allowing the sun to warm my body and the sounds of the Earth to fill my ears is rejuvenating.
Name one Eco-friendly practice that you regularly incorporate into your life or business?
I often use repurposed materials not only as an Eco-friendly practice but to insure a level of uniqueness to the product. I'm quite thrifty and reusing materials gives them new life as well as keeping my costs low.
What do you do every week to find your Earth-Life Balance?
It is good to have balance in all areas of life, doing everything in moderation and including meaningful rest is so important. I'm not the workaholic type so seeking time for myself and friends is key in balancing my mood and increases my motivation to get work done later.
List your top 3 favorite animals.
I like cute, soft animals that I can cuddle :). I had a lamb growing up that was a pal of mine. Also a rabbit and also numerous cats.
